Today I was in the education group and worked in the library at the school. With two of the younger girls I worked specifically on phonics. I would show them a letter and then they would tell me what it was and make the sound of the letter. After that they got to read some really basic books and emphasize sounding each word out. I was really impressed with these little girls and how smart they were. They worked so hard and read really well. I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed working on phonics with them. I love languages so it was really fun to help them learn a new one.
Later in the evening during family time, another little girl was practicing reading, also emphasizing sounding out each letter. I have noticed over the past couple of days that she seems to have developmental problems and although she tries hard, she still struggles with a lot of things. She took one look at my name tag and immediately wanted to sound out each letter of my name. She labored over each letter for quite some time, Nnnn...... Iiiiii.....Cc....Oooooooooo...Llllllll....Ee, she pronounced each letter as perfectly as she could with her thick Indian accent and I thought to myself, "wow, that's great, she's doing better than I initially thought..." After sounding out each letter she looked up at me with a twinkle in her beautiful dark eyes and yelled, "ANNEL!! YOU NAME IS ANNEL!" .... I guess it just didn't click :) It was so adorable though!
